Symptoms include cyclic high fever, rigors, profuse sweating, headache, vomiting, muscle pain, and without prompt treatment, severe anemia, cerebral malaria, organ failure, and death. Our travel clinic pharmacist performs an individualized risk assessment to recommend and prescribe the most appropriate antimalarial chemoprophylaxis under UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and NaTHNaC guidelines: - Atovaquone / Proguanil (Malarone): Daily tablet, started 1–2 days before travel, taken daily during travel, and continued for 7 days after leaving risk area. Minimal side effects. - Doxycycline: Daily antibiotic capsule, started 1–2 days before travel and continued for 4 weeks after return. - Mefloquine (Lariam): Weekly tablet started 3 weeks before departure and continued for 4 weeks post-return.
