Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal disease caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. It is capable of causing rapid and severe dehydration through profuse watery diarrhea ('rice-water stools') and vomiting, which can become fatal within hours if untreated. The oral cholera vaccine (Dukoral) is a pleasant-tasting drinkable suspension containing inactivated Vibrio cholerae bacteria and recombinant cholera toxin B subunit. In addition to protecting against cholera, the B subunit cross-protects against enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC), the leading cause of travellers' diarrhea. The vaccine is taken as 2 oral doses (for adults and children over 6) spaced 1 to 6 weeks apart.
