Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral infection caused by four distinct dengue virus serotypes (DENV 1–4) transmitted by daytime-biting Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. Widely endemic in tropical and subtropical regions of Southeast Asia, the Caribbean, Central and South America, the Pacific, and Africa, dengue causes severe flu-like symptoms including sudden high fever, intense retro-orbital (behind the eye) headache, muscle and joint pain ('breakbone fever'), nausea, and rash. A second infection with a different serotype significantly increases the risk of severe dengue (dengue hemorrhagic fever). Qdenga is a modern tetravalent live-attenuated dengue vaccine approved by the UK MHRA and EMA for individuals aged 4 and older, regardless of prior dengue infection history. The schedule consists of two subcutaneous doses given 3 months apart.
