Most bites cause localized itching, redness, and minor swelling that subsides within 24 to 48 hours. The pharmacist distinguishes normal local inflammatory reactions or histamine responses from true spreading bacterial infections. Where criteria are met, the pharmacist can prescribe NHS oral antibiotics (such as Flucloxacillin, or Clarithromycin/Erythromycin for penicillin-allergic patients) alongside antihistamines and topical creams to soothe itching.
