Hepatitis A is a viral liver infection transmitted via the fecal-oral route, typically by consuming food or water contaminated with the feces of an infected person, or through close physical contact. The virus is widespread in areas with poor sanitation and limited access to clean water across parts of Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and South/Central America. Symptoms include fatigue, nausea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, dark urine, pale stools, and jaundice (yellowing of eyes and skin). The Hepatitis A vaccine (such as Havrix or Vaqta) contains inactivated hepatitis A virus that triggers high levels of neutralizing antibodies. A single initial dose provides protection for up to 1 year, and a booster dose given 6 to 12 months later extends immunity for at least 25 years.
