Shingles is a painful, blistering rash caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus in sensory nerves. Post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN)—intense, debilitating nerve pain that can persist for months or years after the rash heals—is the most common and distressing complication, occurring in up to 30% of older adults who develop shingles. Shingrix is a state-of-the-art non-live, recombinant subunit adjuvanted vaccine that provides greater than 90% protection against shingles and PHN across all adult age groups, with efficacy remaining high for at least 10 years. Unlike older live shingles vaccines, Shingrix cannot cause disease and is safe for immunocompromised individuals. A full course consists of two intramuscular doses given 2 to 6 months apart.
