Sinusitis advice and treatment in EXETER, EX4 2AD at Exwick Pharmacy - Exeter

Exwick Pharmacy - Exeter in EXETER (EX4 2AD) provides NHS Pharmacy First consultations for acute sinusitis. You can see our pharmacist in a private consultation room at NEW VALLEY ROAD, EXWICK for a clinical assessment, guidance on symptom relief, and prescription nasal sprays or antibiotics if clinically necessary.

What causes sinusitis?

Sinusitis is inflammation of the small, air-filled cavities behind your cheekbones and forehead. It usually develops after a viral cold or flu infection that causes mucus buildup and swelling in the nasal passages. In some cases, a secondary bacterial infection takes hold when symptoms persist for over 10 days.

What are the symptoms of sinusitis?

Pain, tenderness and pressure around your cheeks, eyes or forehead
A blocked or stuffy nose
Thick green or yellow mucus from your nose
A reduced or lost sense of smell
Sinus headache
Toothache or pain when chewing
A high temperature (fever)
Bad breath or a feeling of pressure in your ears

In teenagers and older children, sinusitis can also cause persistent coughing, especially at night, and facial swelling.

Who can get sinusitis treatment at a pharmacy?

Yes, if you are

An adult, or child aged 12 or over, with acute sinus symptoms lasting over 7 days

See a GP or call 111 if

Under 12 years old, symptoms lasting over 12 weeks, or immunocompromised

If your symptoms have lasted less than 7 days, they will usually improve with self-care; the pharmacist can advise on decongestants and saline rinses.

What happens at a sinusitis appointment?

1

A private consultation

The pharmacist discusses the duration of your symptoms, previous treatments, and medical history.

2

Targeted examination

They gently check for tenderness over your sinuses and may check your temperature.

3

Treatment & advice

They may supply prescription corticosteroid nasal spray, prescription antibiotics if bacterial infection is indicated, or self-care guidance.

Free on the NHS. Appointments available today.Book appointment

What treatments can the pharmacist offer?

Following national NHS clinical protocols, the pharmacist determines whether your sinusitis is viral or likely bacterial. Depending on your assessment:

Nasal corticosteroid spray

Prescription-strength nasal sprays to reduce inflammation and open up blocked sinus passages.

Antibiotics

Targeted oral antibiotics if your symptoms have lasted over 10 days without improvement or are worsening.

Decongestant & pain guidance

Advice on safe sinus irrigation, warm compresses, and appropriate pain relief.

For more information, see the NHS sinusitis page.

How should I prepare?

Take note of how many days you have had facial pain or nasal discharge, and whether symptoms improved before getting worse again. Bring a list of any current medications.

How much does it cost?

The clinical consultation is completely free on the NHS. Prescription medicines supplied under the NHS Pharmacy First service are subject to the standard NHS prescription charge unless you hold a valid exemption.
