Smoking, acid reflux and allergies can also make your throat sore. The pharmacist will ask about your symptoms to work out the most likely cause.

What treatments can the pharmacist offer?

The pharmacist uses an NHS scoring tool based on your symptoms, such as fever, pus on the tonsils, how quickly it came on and whether you also have a cough or cold. This tells them how likely a bacterial infection is. Depending on the result, you will get one of these:

Advice and pain relief

For most sore throats. The pharmacist explains how to ease symptoms and what to look out for.

Antibiotics

If a bacterial infection is likely. Tablets or a liquid, supplied on the NHS during your appointment.

A referral

If the service is not right for you, the pharmacist will refer you to a GP or another service and pass on your details.

For more information, see the NHS sore throat page.

How should I prepare?

Note when your sore throat started and whether you have had a fever. Tell the pharmacist about any medicines you take and any allergies, especially to penicillin.

How much does it cost?

The consultation is free on the NHS. If the pharmacist supplies a prescription-only medicine, you pay the standard NHS prescription charge unless you get free prescriptions (for example if you are under 16, 16 to 18 and in full-time education, aged 60 or over, pregnant or have a valid exemption certificate).
