Earache advice and treatment in EXETER, EX4 2AD at Exwick Pharmacy - Exeter

Exwick Pharmacy - Exeter in EXETER (EX4 2AD) offers NHS Pharmacy First ear consultations for children aged 1 to 17. Our pharmacist will examine your child's ear with an otoscope in a quiet, private consultation room at NEW VALLEY ROAD, EXWICK to identify the cause of pain and provide prescription treatment if required.

What causes earache in children?

Most earaches in children are caused by acute otitis media (an infection of the middle ear behind the eardrum). This frequently occurs after a cold, teething, or viral throat infection, as swelling blocks the Eustachian tube and traps fluid. While many ear infections resolve on their own within 3 to 7 days, bacterial infections may require antibiotics.

What are the symptoms of an ear infection?

Sharp, dull or throbbing pain inside the ear
Pulling, tugging or rubbing at the ear
A high temperature (38°C or above)
Irritability, crying or restlessness
Difficulty sleeping or settling down
Fluid or discharge leaking from the ear
Difficulty hearing or not responding to quiet sounds
Loss of balance or clumsiness

Younger children may not be able to explain where it hurts, but may refuse food, vomit, or tug repeatedly at their ear.

Who can get earache treatment at a pharmacy?

Yes, if you are

A child or teenager aged 1 to 17 with ear pain or suspected middle ear infection

See a GP or call 111 if

Under 1 year of age, or experiencing chronic discharge lasting over 6 weeks

Adults aged 18 and over with earache should see their GP or book an ear microsuction check if wax buildup is suspected.

What happens at an earache appointment?

1

Gentle discussion

The pharmacist talks with you and your child about when the earache began and any other cold symptoms.

2

Otoscope examination

The pharmacist gently inspects the ear canal and eardrum with an illuminated magnifying otoscope.

3

Treatment & care plan

If acute otitis media is diagnosed, antibiotics (like amoxicillin) or pain relief guidance will be provided directly.

Free on the NHS. Appointments available today.Book appointment

What treatments can the pharmacist offer?

Depending on the appearance of the eardrum and how long your child has had symptoms, the pharmacist can provide:

Pain management guidance

Accurate weight-based paracetamol or ibuprofen dosage guidance to keep your child comfortable.

Prescription antibiotics

Oral antibiotic liquid or capsules supplied directly under NHS protocol if a bacterial infection is diagnosed.

Back-up prescription or referral

A delayed prescription to use only if symptoms worsen, or referral to a GP if complications are suspected.

For more information, see the NHS earache page.

How should I prepare?

Note when the earache started and whether there has been any discharge from the ear. Tell the pharmacist about any medications or allergies, especially penicillin.

How much does it cost?

The ear check and consultation are completely free on the NHS. In England, all prescription medicines for children under 16 (and under 19 in full-time education) are free of charge.
