Impetigo advice and treatment in BASILDON, SS14 2HB at Whitmore Pharmacy - Basildon

Whitmore Pharmacy - Basildon in BASILDON (SS14 2HB) provides fast NHS Pharmacy First care for impetigo. Our pharmacist will examine the skin sores in a private consultation room at 418 WHITMORE WAY and supply topical antiseptics or prescription antibiotics to clear the infection quickly.

What causes impetigo?

Impetigo is a highly contagious bacterial skin infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria. It usually starts when bacteria enter skin through a break, graze, cold sore, or insect bite. It is very common in young children and spreads easily in nurseries and schools through close contact or shared towels.

What are the symptoms of impetigo?

Red sores that quickly burst and ooze fluid
Crusty golden-brown or honey-coloured patches over sores
Patches that grow and spread, commonly around the mouth and nose
Mild itching or soreness around affected skin
Fluid-filled blisters that leave raw patches when they burst (bullous impetigo)
Swollen lymph nodes near the affected area
Redness around the border of the crusted lesions
Patches spreading to arms, legs, or torso

Children should stay off nursery, school, or playgroups until 48 hours after starting treatment, or until the sores have completely crusted and dried.

Who can get impetigo treatment at a pharmacy?

Yes, if you are

An adult or child aged 1 year or over with suspected localised or widespread impetigo

See a GP or call 111 if

Under 1 year of age, recurrent impetigo, or widespread bullous impetigo in an infant

Infants under 12 months require direct GP review to rule out more serious neonatal skin infections.

What happens at an impetigo appointment?

1

Symptom check

The pharmacist discusses when the sores appeared and whether others at home or school are affected.

2

Skin assessment

They examine the appearance of the crusts and determine whether it is non-bullous or bullous impetigo.

3

Treatment & hygiene advice

They supply hydrogen peroxide 1% cream, topical antibiotic ointment, or oral antibiotic liquid/capsules as appropriate.

Free on the NHS. Appointments available today.Book appointment

What treatments can the pharmacist offer?

NHS Pharmacy First guidance recommends targeted treatment to avoid unnecessary resistance:

Hydrogen peroxide 1% cream

Effective first-line antiseptic cream for localised, non-bullous impetigo without antibiotic resistance risk.

Topical / oral antibiotics

Fusidic acid cream or oral flucloxacillin capsules/liquid when impetigo is widespread or not responding.

Infection control advice

Clear guidance on towel washing, hand hygiene, and school/nursery exclusion times.

For more information, see the NHS impetigo page.

How should I prepare?

Avoid scrubbing or picking the crusted sores before your appointment. Tell the pharmacist about any known allergies, especially to penicillin.

How much does it cost?

The clinical consultation is free on the NHS. Treatments supplied for children under 16 are completely free. Standard prescription charges apply for adults without exemptions.
