Why get vaccinated against the flu?

Influenza is an unpredictable respiratory virus that can lead to severe illness, pneumonia, and hospitalisation, especially in older adults and those with underlying health conditions. The flu strains circulating change every year, which is why annual vaccination is essential to ensure updated immune protection.

What does the flu vaccine protect against?

Sudden high temperature of 38°C or above
Severe whole-body muscle aches and joint pain
Exhaustion and extreme fatigue lasting 1–2 weeks
Persistent dry chesty cough
Severe headache and sinus congestion
Sore throat, runny nose and chills
Secondary bacterial chest infections & bronchitis
Risk of pneumonia and winter hospital admission

Getting vaccinated also helps protect vulnerable family members, newborn babies, and elderly relatives around you.

How should I prepare?

Wear a short-sleeved top or loose clothing that allows easy access to your upper arm. Please bring your NHS number if you know it.
