Shingles advice and treatment in LONDON, E3 2RN at Parnell Pharmacy - Bow, London

Parnell Pharmacy - Bow, London in LONDON (E3 2RN) offers NHS Pharmacy First shingles consultations. Our pharmacist will examine your rash in a private consultation room at 625 - 627 Roman Road, Bow, London, E3 2RN, assess the severity, and supply prescription antiviral medication (such as aciclovir) to help speed recovery and reduce nerve pain.

What causes shingles?

Shingles is caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus—the same virus that causes chickenpox. After having chickenpox, the virus stays dormant in nerve tissues. Years later, weakened immunity, stress, or age can trigger the virus to travel along nerve fibres to the skin, causing a characteristic rash on one side of the body.

What are the symptoms of shingles?

A tingling, burning, stabbing or throbbing pain on one side of the body
Red blotches that develop into fluid-filled blisters
A rash restricted to a distinct band or dermatome (one side only)
Extreme skin tenderness to light touch or clothing
A mild fever, chills or headache
Feeling generally exhausted or unwell
Blisters that eventually dry out and crust over within 7–10 days
Itching or aching in the affected skin area

Shingles cannot be caught from someone with shingles, but someone who has never had chickenpox could catch chickenpox from direct contact with fluid from your blisters.

Who can get shingles treatment at a pharmacy?

Yes, if you are

An adult aged 18 or over with a suspected shingles rash that appeared within the last 72 hours

See a GP or call 111 if

Under 18, pregnant, rash near the eye, or severely immunocompromised

Antiviral tablets work best when started within 72 hours of the rash first appearing, but can still be considered if new blisters are continuing to form.

What happens at a shingles appointment?

1

Private consultation

The pharmacist asks about the onset of pain and rash in our private consultation room.

2

Visual inspection

They carefully check the rash distribution to confirm it follows a single nerve pathway.

3

Antiviral dispensing

If indicated, you receive a full course of prescription antiviral tablets (such as aciclovir) along with pain management guidance.

Free on the NHS. Appointments available today.Book appointment

What treatments can the pharmacist offer?

Prompt antiviral therapy reduces the severity of shingles and lowers the risk of long-term post-herpetic neuralgia:

Antiviral tablets

A 7-day course of prescription antivirals (e.g. aciclovir) to halt viral replication and speed blister healing.

Nerve pain management

Tailored guidance on appropriate analgesics and soothing calamine lotions.

Safety netting & hygiene advice

Instructions on keeping the rash clean, wearing loose clothing, and protecting vulnerable people.

For more information, see the NHS shingles page.

How should I prepare?

Note the exact date and time the rash or burning sensation began. Wear loose, comfortable clothing that makes it easy for the pharmacist to inspect the affected skin.

How much does it cost?

The clinical consultation is free on the NHS. If prescription antiviral medication is supplied, standard NHS prescription charges apply unless you have an exemption.
