Altitude Sickness - In-Person Pharmacy Consultation
Clinical Overview

What is Altitude Sickness?

Travelling to a high-altitude destination can increase your risk of altitude sickness, especially if you ascend quickly. During this consultation, a healthcare professional can review your itinerary, planned rate of ascent, medical history and any medicines you take. They can advise on gradual acclimatisation, symptoms to watch for and whether preventive medication is suitable for you. Medication is subject to an individual clinical assessment and availability. It does not replace gradual ascent. If you develop symptoms while travelling, do not continue ascending; seek medical advice. Severe symptoms require urgent descent and medical help.

Eligibility & Suitability

Who is Altitude Sickness for?

  • Adults aged 18 years and over who are travelling to high altitudes and are considered at risk of altitude sickness. A clinical assessment and valid informed consent are required before supply.
  • The service is not suitable under the PGD for patients with relevant contraindications, including hypersensitivity to sulphonamides or acetazolamide, renal or hepatic impairment, glaucoma, epilepsy, significant electrolyte or acid/base abnormalities, pregnancy or suspected pregnancy, breastfeeding, previous kidney stones, specified psychiatric conditions, relevant pulmonary conditions, or medicines that contraindicate acetazolamide.
Indications & Symptoms

When should I consider Altitude Sickness?

  • When experiencing early or ongoing symptoms related to Altitude Sickness requiring professional evaluation.
  • When seeking prompt treatment or licensed prescription supply before symptoms escalate.
  • For preventive clinical screening, routine monitoring, or required travel health protection.

Preparation

Before Your Appointment

Follow these simple steps before attending the clinic:

  • 1
Before your appointment, provide details of your destination, travel dates, maximum altitude, planned ascent and previous experience of altitude sickness.
  • 2
Bring details of all medicines and supplements you currently take and inform the healthcare professional about any medical conditions, allergies, pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • 3
Acetazolamide is used off-label for prevention of altitude sickness, so this should be discussed as part of the consent process.

After Your Appointment

Clinical advice for ongoing recovery and support:

  • Take acetazolamide exactly as directed by the healthcare professional. Continue to ascend gradually and allow adequate time for acclimatisation. Acetazolamide does not make it safe to continue ascending if symptoms of altitude sickness develop.
  • Stay adequately hydrated and maintain sufficient food intake. Avoid alcohol and strenuous exercise during initial acclimatisation where advised.
  • If altitude-sickness symptoms develop, stop ascending and remain at the same altitude until symptoms improve. If symptoms worsen or do not improve, descend and seek medical attention.
  • Seek urgent medical attention and descend immediately if you develop confusion, loss of coordination, severe weakness, difficulty breathing at rest, persistent cough, blue/grey lips or skin, or other severe symptoms suggestive of serious altitude illness.
