Clinical Overview

What is Chickenpox Vaccine?

Chickenpox (varicella) is a highly infectious viral illness caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It spreads through respiratory droplets or direct contact with blister fluid. Symptoms include an intensely itchy rash that develops into fluid-filled blisters, fever, loss of appetite, and headache. While often mild in young children, chickenpox can lead to serious complications including bacterial skin infections, scarring, pneumonia, and encephalitis, and is substantially more severe in adults, pregnant women, and newborns. The Chickenpox vaccine (Varivax or Varilrix) is a live-attenuated viral vaccine that provides 98% protection against severe disease in children and 75–85% protection against all infection. The course consists of two doses administered 4 to 8 weeks apart.
