Clinical Overview

What is Emergency Hormonal Contraception (Morning-After Pill) Private?

Emergency Hormonal Contraception (the morning-after pill) is an effective method of preventing unintended pregnancy following unprotected sexual intercourse, condom failure, missed contraceptive pills, or sexual assault. Emergency contraception works primarily by preventing or delaying ovulation; it does NOT cause an abortion and will not interrupt an established pregnancy. Our private women's health service provides a compassionate, confidential, non-judgmental consultation in our private clinic room. Our pharmacist assesses the timing of intercourse and your cycle to supply the most suitable oral emergency contraceptive: 1. ellaOne (Ulipristal Acetate 30mg): Highly effective up to 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected sex, and superior efficacy compared to levonorgestrel, particularly if ovulation is imminent or in women with higher BMI. 2. Levonelle / Levonorgestrel 1.5mg: Licensed for use within 72 hours (3 days) of unprotected sex. The pharmacist will also discuss future regular contraception and STI prevention.

Preparation

Before Your Appointment

Follow these simple steps before attending the clinic:

  • 1
Attend as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse—emergency pills are significantly more effective the earlier they are taken.
  • 2
Note the date and approximate time of unprotected sex, the date of your last menstrual period, and any regular medications you take.
Recovery & Safety Net

After Your Appointment

Clinical advice for ongoing recovery and support:

  • Take the pill immediately with water. If you vomit within 3 hours of taking the tablet, you must contact the pharmacy immediately to obtain another dose as the medication will not have been absorbed.
  • Your next period may arrive a few days earlier or later than expected, and may be lighter or heavier. Use reliable barrier contraception (condoms) until your next period.
  • Safety-netting: Take a pregnancy test 3 weeks after taking emergency contraception, especially if your period is more than 7 days late or is unusually light.
