Clinical Overview

What is Rabies Vaccine?

Rabies is an almost 100% fatal viral infection of the central nervous system transmitted through the saliva of infected mammals (primarily dogs, bats, monkeys, and cats) via bites, scratches, or licks on broken skin. Once clinical symptoms develop, rabies is virtually incurable. Pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis (such as Rabipur) involves a course of inactivated cell-culture rabies vaccines. Pre-exposure vaccination simplifies post-exposure medical management if you are bitten abroad by eliminating the need for Rabies Immunoglobulin (RIG)—a biological product that is extremely scarce and often counterfeit or unavailable in developing nations—and reducing the required post-exposure vaccine course from four doses to two.

Eligibility & Suitability

Who is Rabies Vaccine for?

  • Eligible: Adults and children travelling to countries where rabies is endemic in mammals (Asia, Africa, Central/South America), especially those engaging in trekking, cycling, wildlife handling, or spending prolonged periods in rural communities far from medical facilities.
  • Contraindications: Severe allergy to previous rabies vaccine doses or egg/polymyxin excipients.
Indications & Symptoms

When should I consider Rabies Vaccine?

  • When experiencing early or ongoing symptoms related to Rabies Vaccine requiring professional evaluation.
  • When seeking prompt treatment or licensed prescription supply before symptoms escalate.
  • For preventive clinical screening, routine monitoring, or required travel health protection.
